Hey JS! Really liken the mystery! I feel like I am a more front foot heavy surfer and I heard the Blak Box is REALLY good for weak-back-footed surfers. Is this true? Anyhow,I was just wondering what my dims would be for blak box. I am 5'6 1/2" and weigh around 130 lbs. My Mystery is 5'6" x 18 1/4" and 2 1/16" thick.

Congrats Jack! The Mystery looks like a fun board. What size would you recommend for someone 180cm and 80kgs? I currently ride a 6'2" x 18 5/8" x 2 5'16" Jordy Model and love it.

I would look at something similar to what Parko rides in the Mystery, as he is similar height & weight to yourself. Take a look at the 5'10 19 2 3/8

Hi Ralph, Mystery is an x-series model which makes it a cross between a summer groveler (like blak box) and a conventional high performance board. We recommend you ride summer series boards up to 4" shorter than your performance & X series around 2" shorter. eg: 5'10 blak box 6'0 mystery 6'2 performance board. Its a basic formula but works really well in most cases. JS

Hey Joe, the rail isn't too low that it will cause you any problems. Its probably a good option cause it's a little fuller in outline than the hi performance models but will still perform like one. JS

Hi TASSIELOC - yes you could say the three act as a mini quiver, covering you for all conditions. There is no overlap between the Kingpin and the Konfusion as they both offer unqiue characteristics. The Kingpin is more of an inbetween board. Half way between summer groveler and high performance wave, whereas the Konfusion is a modern day high performance board. You can definitely order the Konfusion with a different tail but keep in mind it will offer a different style of surfing. JS

Hi PHIL - You are almost the exact same specs as Occy, although you may have an inch or so on him in height. He rides a 5'10" in the Nitro and I would recommend the same for you. As for glass jobs you are best going a 4x6 on the deck and a 4 on the bottom. This is the next step up from 4x4x4 so will offer more strength on the deck without being too heavy. JS

Hi TODD - The major difference between a signature pro model and the Konfusion is that the Konfusion offers a degree of forgiveness due to its curvier outlines, It has a slightly boxier rail compared to the Parko and this is designed to stop catching during turns in the softer conditions. Its basically a high performance board that has a bit more meat so that its suitable for the smaller gutless days when your Parko might not be generating the speed you require. It has a flat entry slight single to double under front foot to deeper douple through the fins with a slight single out the tail. JS

HI JS, this konfusion board looks awesome. I was even wondering before it came out, what board AI was riding on his I SURF BECAUSE flick...now, i got my answer.
Anyway, I'm 5'9", 84 kg(bit overweight), riding a 6'1" 18 1/2, x 2 1/4 Combat, which goes allright in waves with a bit of push behind it, but def not a good paddling board or small wave board. I was keen on getting a 5'8 NItro as a small wave board, and keep the combat as my day to day...but now, with the konfusion released, which one do you recommend and what dimension should i ride the Konfusion??
Will i be able to have fun on those real small days, at the goldie beachies with the konfusion?

Hi DAN - I would be going for the 6'0" Konfusion, you'll find with the extra width and thickness and flatter entry that it will be much easier paddling into the waves...however...the Konfusion is designed for all conditions, crappy beachies to pumping points so with that in mind there will be some crossover between your Combat and the Konfusion. If you want a board for goldie beachies when its gutless then I'd be trying out the Nitro for a super responsive ride. JS

I have a 6'0 x 18 1/2 x 2 1/4 combat that works well for me. How would that compare to a konfusions in stock dims?? It seems that the konfusion is almost a replacement for the combat model, would that be a fair call?

Hi KEV - not quite. The combat is a much more refined performance shortboard geared towards quality waves. The Konfusion is what we're calling the modern day shortboard, it has a slightly curvier outline, a touch more width and a unique concave which means you can drop an inch and have a board suitable for 1-6ft surf. The added width and hip composition allow a tight turning arc. The Konfusion will have a flatter entry allowing you to paddle into the gutless waves a lot easier. Hope this helps - JS

Hey JS I'm riding a 5'10 19 2.3 wide outline local custom kinda based off the dumpster diver. It works alright but I could use a tad more float for Florida waves with not a lot power. I haven't really been able to find a perfect shortboard for me and the Konfusion description is exactly what I'm looking for. I like using one board for everything. I have a Nitro..5'6 and also a 5'8 XR which I love,I am short guy 5'7 155lbs.What I want is a board for REALLY good waves that are really hollow for a trip upcoming.The waves probably will be anywhere from head high to 2ft overhead but have a pretty steep drop with hard offshores.Konfusion??Wait for the mystery model??Trip is not til March...Had a Parko small wave 6'0 that was too big for me even in overhead surf.

I'm excited about the konfusion, but undecided on 5'11" or 5'10" in stock dims. Currently on a 6'0" x 18 1/2 x
2 1/4 combat, wondering how either of these would compare in float to it. I want to go as short as possible but don't want to have less float than the combat, what do you recommend.

Hi Kev - good question. If you want to go as short as possible then I think the 5'10 will be fine + you are very light. The Konfusion foam distribution is flat across the deck to lower rails, this is designed specifically for flotation with ease of turning and also for a lower centre of gravity. I'm 6'3" and 83kg, what kind of dim's would you recommend for the konfusion? would i get away with the stock 6'2 or would it be worth ordering one with 2 1/2 volume. Hi Will - You will get away with the 6'2 for sure. The foam distribution is a little different in the Konfusion as the foam remains consistent across the deck, rather than tapering off. This means we can drop the thickness a touch. The concave is single to early double to single out the tail. Cheers -JS

Hey Phil - It depends if you want a board purely for the small stuff or a board that is going to double as a small waves but also handle the bigger conditions. The Blakbox holds in anything up to 3ft and I would recommend a 5'8 for you given the info you've provided. The Konfusion I would recommend a 6'0. Cheers JS

I have been surfing my new Konfusion for the last few sessions, it is really quick and responsive and easy to air. I am regretting getting a 5'10 (all they had in stock) which seems to be just a little to big, but putting in some fcs pc k2.1 fins compensates for this a bit. It is a sick board, goes absolutely nuts in wedging shore breaks.

I recommend sizing down 1-2" on a Konfusion from your normal board. The dimensions of the Konfusion allow for extra paddle power also. Lots of love for the Konfusion - glad you are considering jumping on one.

I had the the cv8 really liked it ,but thinking of getting the konfusion and wondering how they would differ in performance and ride? Also are soar glass on fins available for custom boards made here in the states (California) and are they using the same glassing schedule for 
the fins here? Seems like all the 
boards I got from you that were made in aus. had a half a patch which I like, 
and most guys over here in the states 
but a full patch all the up making it to

How does the konfusion compare to say the parko for looseness/responsive feeling? AI loved a loose board so is the konfusion pretty loose/turn easily and quickly? Already have one on order but curiosity is killing me. Used to ride only channel islands....now i am only riding JS. Can't wait for I am red!!!

I'm 88 Kgs, 31 yrs, intermediate (been surfing a lot in the past 2 years, a bunch of Indo trips etc), live in Sydney.


For my "normal" shorty I've been riding the Chunky 6'4 Occy (19.5 x 2 5/8) this is definitely too boaty for me now that I've gotten better and have lost 5 kgs.

I jumped on a mates 6'4 Jordy (19' x 2.5') it was really nice when I was on the wave, but probably taking off a bit late / not getting into the wave early enough due to the much lower vol than I'm used to.

I've been riding a 6'2' x 19.75' x 2.5 Insight Penn Designs "Zero" round tail for small waves ( 3.5 foot and under waves)

So what size Konfusion do you think I'd enjoy for a nice all rounder board?

Had my konfusion out 3 times now in not so great conditions and it has worked great. Really responsive,great paddling, fast. Really all positives for sure. Really want to turn it loose in some good surf so it can really shine. Then I will dub it greatest board ever. It is on its way.

Hey Lourenco. I'm 6' and 75 kgs. Floats me fine and paddles really well into waves. The thick wetsuit won't make any difference imo.

Just wanted to add that I picked up a new Konfusion last week and it is the sweetest board that I have ever ridden.

I have surfed a range of different boards, including firewires, compsands and different PUs but there is definitely something special about this board.

I am 85kg, just under six foot tall and competent (i surf a couple of times a week) but no where near one of the better surfers in the local line up. I got a 6'2 which feels perfect.

How much wider is the Konfusion's nose/tail width than a standard shorty?
My current shortboard is 6.3 x 19 x 2.25, works good in 3-6 foot hawaiian. I'm tall and lanky. My step-down boards are my all-a-rounders. I want to order the Konfusion as that. say 6.1 or 6.1 1/2, and should i go wider or keep it at 19", or 19 1/8" or 1/4". What if i want to get the tail pulled in too, like Jacks boards are lookin.

is the board parko riding the same board that is saw JS riding at 6 ft deserts ,i'm pretty sure it was a quad.

Hey Micko,yeah mate the board i rode at deserts was a kingpin, went amazing the quad went really good in the barrel, so fast. were building stock at the moment so stores should see them in about 4 weeks.

so far the quad has worked best at speed, ie in barrels and open faces. if you want to surf vertical then the thurster set up is the go. JS

hey Ed, custom kingpins will be available as long as you stick close to the stock sizes. making them thinner or thicker is no problem. the stock sizes on the site are as a suggestion and also what you would find stock in store.

the kingpin will surf more like a standard board compared with the VX5. the VX5 being a vee bottom with more a fish style outline will surf slightly more flat. Kingpin is the go.

Hi JS the Kingpin looks sick. trying to decide between the parko 6'1 signature or the 5'9 Kingpin. I mostly surf small below average Perth waves so guessing kingpin is the better option. any advice would be much appreciated

without knowing your ability id suggest the 5'6 Kingpin. if you are an advanced surfer then you could ride a 5'4 or 5'5.

What is the purpose of the mini flyer in the tail of the King Pin, is it to make the board looser? I've been riding Bourton round tail quads for the past 2 years which are extremely responsive, how would the King Pin differ than those? I saw one at Kirra Surf, great looking board.

I have the 5'11 18 1/4 2 1/4 Parko which was my go to in all conditions until I rode the Blak Box (5'8 19 1/2 2 1/4) in smaller surf and have to say it is the fastest most responsive board I have ever ridden. What board should I get next to get the speed and drive of the Blak Box with a bit more hold for the larger days? I am 5'7 165lbs. Thanks!

Hey JS,I love your work i have to say, i´m 6´0 and 102kg i got 6´6 300kw and a Jordy 6´3-19 a month ago i was keen to trade my CI Pod6´2 20 3/4 2 5/8 in to get a Blak Box as replacement to surf a more modern summer board shape but now i saw the king pin and i´m confused.Is the only difference the Quad fins!i´m a intermediate to advanced surfer what would you recommend i was looking at the 6´2 Blak box or the 6´2 -6´3 kingpin.

the mini flyers are there just to pull the tail in slightly so it doesnt have too much area. without them the tail would be too wide, it would go straight good but not much else. the biggest difference between mine and the Bourtons is the Kingpin will go way better.....

Hey TONY, I would say the Kingpin would be the better transition board coming from a 6'4 retro fish. Its suitable in all conditions so you can't go wrong. Retro fishes are usually much wider, so depending on your current dimensions you don't want to stray too far from what your used to. I'd say 6'1 or 6'2 would be fine. JS

JS you must have the patience of a saint....all these questions!!! One thing I would say though is can you stop making all these new models. I have a JS Jordy Smith model and was looking at getting a Nitro, then the Blak Box came out so was going to get that instead now the Kingpin!!!! My head is spinning :-)

Hi JIM - Great to hear about your BlakBox. Our teamriders are generally riding their Kingpins 1 inch longer than their BlakBoxes, except for Occy who rides a 5'11 in both. I suggest the 5'11. Hi, I have just missed out on a 5'11 Blak Box here in the UK so I'm looking for an alternative model. What would you suggest for UK waves 0-3ft? I'm not after a fishy type board but a high performance board for sloppy/small conditions. As far as I can see there's the Nitro/V2.1/VX5???

Hi MIKE, thats a shame you missed out on the Blak Box, but all the other boards are equally as fun. I would suggest to you the Nitro, you would ride it the same length as the Blakbox, so in your case the 5'11. It is suggested for waves 0-3 ft however I have ridden mine in 4ft surf with bigger front fins and it goes a treat. Cheers JS

Hey JS, I am just purchsing a couple of new boards from you guys and have bought 6'0 Bruce for my standard shortboard and a VX5 for a small day performance fish. My question is do you think the VX5 would be the most performance style fish for up to 3-4 ft in your range. I usually ride a RNF 5'6 and have gone for the same dimensions on the VX5...or would you recommend something else?

Hey E-Man, stoked you liking your boards man. I think your definitely on the money with the 6'4 Kingpin, as for the groveller you can drop one inch from Kingpin to BlakBox so I'd recommend the 6'3 BB, perfect in anything up to 3ft. Cheers mate -JS

I am 5,9 and weight about 83kgs. what are your thoughts on sizing for myself, and will this board give me a little more performance?

Hi Dave - yeah for sure mate. The Kingpin is much more pulled in in the tail than the spitfire, the spitfire also has a really wide outline restricting you from getting high performance out of the board. The kingpin has enough foam in the deck and rails to give you the stability and paddling speed. Cheers JS

Hi Pete - The Luke range is still not as chunky as the board you are riding, if you were set on Luke you can definintely tweak the dimensions a bit but to be totally honest given that you are a bigger guy and for Sydney beachies I would definintely recommend the Konfusion model. All our local heavy powerful surfers are loving the Konfusion and it really is the perfect allrounder. The foam distribution is different to the Luke and all other models as it maintains its thickness across the deck, giving more volume. Any other questions let me know. Cheers JS

Hi, I'm about the same height and weight as Pete (i'm 94-95 kgs dry) and i have a 6'2 Kingpin. I find it has heaps of buoyancy for me and is really fast. I have surfed it in waves from 1 - 5 ft. Ive found that it really performs well in all conditions but really excels when the waves are firing.

am 6'3 205lbs 60 yrs ride 6'2 fish to 6'6 short in smaller wvs.what size kingpin do you think for santa cruz?

I would be steering you into a Konfusion 6'3 - it is giving you a little more thickness (2.5) to contend with the Sydney mush. The Konfusion is the current team favourite - myself and all the boys are loving it!!!!

Hey JORDAN - I would definintely be recommending the 6'1 or 6'2 in the Kingpin. You'll find the 6'1 is rather close to your current dimensons but you have to keep in mind there is a bit more volume in the rail and added volume in the tail area too. I'd say the 6'1 mate. Good luck JS

JS-I am loving the mini-quiver I have built in the last six monthes consisting of a 6'1 Konfusion, 5'10 Kingpin, and 5'9 Blakbox. Theres almost a board for every condition lately. Was looking at 5'6 Sonic the other day, but also have seen that the Buried Treasure is on its way. Any idea of when those will be hitting the racks in So Cal, US? BTW, I took my Konfusion to the points in S. Mexico and it went so insane in those waves.

I am an average surfer (have been surfing for 10 years now on frequent basis) and recently had to move from Sydney to Italy. My standard shortboard is a D Handley 6'2''x18 1/2x2 1/4 with a squash tail and I have been generally happy with this. I am now looking into trying something a little different - more universal with 1 - a bit more paddle power when the waves are not pushy enough (mediterranian crap) and 2 - something that will give me a different feel than my standard shorty in both crappy and good waves between zero and 6 feet. The Kingpin looks like exactly what I have been looking for. I was thinking of getting it in 5'11'' but am a bit hesitant about going out on a 4-6 foot day on a 5'11'' board. Just wanted to ask you for advice…is this the right board (or should I be thinking more blak box or burried treasure)? Is 5'11'' the right size or would you go a little longer? I am 6'1'' and 80kgs so pretty standard…Thanks a lot for your help!

Hey JS I live in Auckland NZ, so I get a wide range of waves, from epic points, to beaches and reefs ranging in size from 1-8 foot usually. I am looking for a good all around short board that will suit most conditions. I usually ride between a 6'-6'2" 18 1/4 X 2 1/4 (roughly). I have a nice mini gun, so when its over 6 foot I have it covered. Was looking at the Kingpin. Would this be a good board for me?, and what size. Im 5'8" and 73kg. What a board! Got my Kingpin a few weeks ago, and thought I'd share my newfound wisdom with those considering getting one.
FWIW, I'm 6'1 x 77-80kg. I got the 6'1 thinking it'd have more range, and not knowing how much volume it actually had (took a punt and bought one off the web). This is no skinny little wafer, it's got heaps of float, and I could have gone smaller, but am happy with the length. Have surfed it mostly in a 3/2 steamer and I stroke into waves with ease. Perfect day at my local yesterday, and the board shone in 4-5ft waves. I wish JS would make a step up version :o)

Hi JS. I'm bang up for a Kingpin but am stuck between a 6'1" and a 6'2". I'm approx 90kgs, 6ft and coming off a 6" CI Pod. Loved the Pod, was just the right size but am smitten with the Kingpin set up. My ordinary short board size would be 6'4" but I tend not to us it - I go from my small wave board straight to a step up. So, what do you reckon size wise for me? Both sizes feel ace under the arm but am conscious the 6'2" has a good amount more foam than the 6'1". Any wise words of wisdome would be appreciated. Many thanks

Chris H, That is the winning combination of all the fins we tried (and we tried alot) they are LE-3 fronts and KR proto trailers - From that we made the current KR X4. Should be available most store that sell our boards. JS

Chris, I would recommend the 5'10 in both kingpin and blak box. Kingpin will definatly give you the most speed without much effort and variety from its fin setup but blak box probably has more performance characteristics. JS

hi js i have a 6'1 bruce irons which works great and i love it i had it for 3 years and is my go to board when the surf is good and the waves are curvy i live in mexico southern baja i also have a scorcher 6'0 x 18.75 x 2.25 and i used for medium waves like waist to hed high not very powrfull but i am looking for a fun small wave board if you can help me with your recomendations i am 6'0 and i weight 78kg i am average surfer i can do turns and starting to do airs on my frontside and on my backhand i have a litle trouble doing the turns but i am working i surf about 4 times a week thank you very much.

Hi JS, luv your boards. i have a Nitro and it rips. Could i ask Why the Nitro is listed as holding 3ft, but the Buried Treasure is up to 4ft? I would have thought the Nitro had a better outline etc.

Hey JS, thanks for your tip. I ended up going with a the 6'2" Kingpin and absolutely love it! A little bit of extra foam under the man belly helps a heap. And had it out in some nice 4fts and it rocked! Good work Dan
